Leonard C Minch, 97, Rest in Peace

Being born the son of Leonard C Minch (CSM, USA-Ret) has been the luckiest happenstance of my life. He was and is, simply, the best man I have ever met or known. His moral compass was welded at true north and his example of how to live, and die, was exceptional. He confronted life face to face, he mastered it, and he died on his own terms.

Last Thursday, at 6:20 AM, he drew his last breath. I am devastated and completely defeated for the first time in my life. I write these words between tears for my loss. I am very selfish that way. He would laugh at me and say, “I was 97” as if that would explain it all.

So I finally got an interview with The Donald. He dropped by Austin and I drove out to the airport — where he was refueling his great big jet with his great big name on it — and we chatted in a hangar.

[This is a huge secret. Do not tell anyone who has just moved to Austin from say California or Milwaukee. They have to discover it themselves.]

So forget about The Boss, he’s busy thinking about the Final Four semifinals tonight. Screw him.

I want to talk to you today about the curious phenomenon of permitless concealed handgun carry. This is not a diatribe in either support or defense. Make up your own mind. Continue reading

Big Red Car here. Hey, SXSW has become a monster. Now they’re hawking flying cars!

The Big Red Car wants some of that action. Look at this — available in two years and already flying.

You have to love a flying car but why can’t it be a Big Red Car? Come on, y’all, let’s make it a Big Red Car? Can I get an AMEN?

But, hey, what the Hell do I really know anyway? I’m just a Big Red Car.

Cafe Amelie, New Orleans is Unfair to Tourists

Big Red Car here. I didn’t get to go to New Orleans for the wedding and I’m pissed off.

New Orleans is one of those perfect getaway places. The kind of place a Big Red Car should be able to take a road trip to!

So, now we turn to Cafe Amelie. Struggle with the pronunciation for a few minutes and then think of “Emily” with an “A”. Got it? Continue reading
