China, Tariffs, Negotiations, And Saving Face

One of the unique concepts of the Asian mind is the idea of “face.” It is a stew with reputation, honor, social standing, wealth, power, dignity, moral  character, and integrity being the main ingredients.

One may give face, lose face, or save face and the Chinese have been focused on face for more than 5,000 years. The rest of the world is not so fixated on face.

Why do we care about face, Big Red Car?

Because, dear reader, we are dealing with the Chinese in regard to tariffs and non-tariff barriers to trade and face is a big deal with the Chinese.

The Chinese and the Americans — now having put the issue in the middle of the table and feeling the first impacts of the tariffs — desperately want to arrive at some compromise.

 1. The Americans — meaning President Trump — are more than willing to enter into discussions and already have. The Trump admin is looking for a deal to address tariffs and Chinese practices such as access to Chinese courts to address civil business litigation, the safety of intellectual property owned by Americna companies, access to Chinese markets for American goods, and other specific, substantive Chinese bad trade practices.

 2. The Chinese — desperate to maintain face and not to look powerless in the eyes of the world but dealing with a dicey economy themselves — want to export their many goods to the United States, the most powerful and robust economy in the world.

We are now seeing the impact of tariffs in American ports with a meaningful reduction in traffic. Continue reading

The Green Card V The Trump Gold Card I

Good morning, dear reader, today we discuss the existing immigration EB-5 Investor program and the impending Trump Gold Card.

What is the EB-5 progam, Big Red Car?

The EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program (administered by the USCIS — US Citizenship and Immigration Service) was created in 1990 as a pathway for investors to attain a green card as a result of an investment in the United States that created at least 10 new jobs.

Since the inception of the program, it appears:

 1. that as many as 240,000 visas (including the families of the foreign immigrant investor) have been granted;

 2. that more than $50B has been invested;

 3. that the US Treasury has generated approximately $20B in tax revenue; and,

 4. that 1.0MM jobs have been created as a direct result of the investment.

The jobs are estimated using the formula of “direct jobs” X 1.5 indirect jobs to arrive at the final tally. Seems a bit tenuous to Big Red Cars. Continue reading

Dragon Energy

We are only a couple of weeks into the Trump 2.0 administration and I can already feel the palpable improvement — meaning increase — in governing energy emanating from what was essentially a morgue during the Biden administration.

Honestly, I cannot recall the Biden admin, but I turn 74 tomorrow, so that could just be on me. I used to watch Joe Biden walk to/from Marine One and see that Old Man Gait that had that Nascar “pile-up-at-the-turn” quality to it.

When everybody recognized how feeble Joe Biden looked walking to Marine One, the White House assigned people to walk with him so his fragility was not on as direct display thereby validating the concern for the thinking world. Yikes!
