CEO Coaching — Trust

Big Red Car here.  Ahhh, what an orgy of football yesterday.  I don’t think The Boss even left the house yesterday.

So we are back to the issue of what to look for in a CEO coach and today we’re going to talk about trust.

WTF, Big Red Car, what is TRUST?

Trust is the result of much of what we have been talking about recently.  It is the special sauce which defines an effective CEO coaching arrangement.

Trust is the reliance that a CEO places on a coach based upon the coach’s demonstrated integrity, experience, knowledge, competence, reliability, accessibility, character and wisdom.  [Wow, Big Red Car, that is some heavy stuff.]

Like Ringo Starr sang:  “It Don’t Come Easy”

How do you grow trust, Big Red Car?

Trust is built over time, Old Sport.  There is no substitute for the passage of time.

Oh, you can make snap judgments and if you have done your homework well — most CEOs are pretty fair judges of horseflesh — you will make a damn good decision right from the outset.

Some things can be tested immediately — like experience.  The Boss has 33 years of CEOing under his belt so that’s an easy one to test, no?

You will have to work the deal and make your assessments with the passage of time.

At the end of 90 days, you will have a very good idea if this relationship is going to evolve and develop into one that has that special sauce, trust, at its core.

Doing the work

In the end, you will have to do all the work to build trust.  Remember the journey we have been on together:

CEO Coaching — Experience

CEO Coaching — Chemistry

CEO Coaching — Relationship

CEO Coaching — Sounding Board

CEO Coaching — Zone of Safety

There is no substitute for pondering what you want out of a CEO coaching arrangement and then doing the work.  Bit of work up front pays huge dividends in the long run.

If you need some help or just want to chat give The Boss a call at 512-656-1383 or drop him an email at [email protected].  Don’t worry, he’s easy.

But, hey, what do I really know anyway?  I’m just a Big Red Car.  Be good to yourself because remember — it don’t come easy, Old Sport.  Trust.
