If you listen to the Democrats — in particular Schumer, Pelosi, and Jeffries — y0u are deluged with a crap swallow wave of nonsense about how the world as we know it is at the end because Trump 2.0 is reducing the Jabba the Hutt waist line of our bloated, overgrown government.
Polling indicates more than 80% of the American electorate thinks the US government is too damn big and grotesquely overweight. You can’t get 80% of Americans to agree on free ice cream, amigos.
It is also sayeth the dumbstruck Dems: wildly unconstitutional, anti-democracy, fascist, and a threat to democracy. All that at the same time.
So what is it, Big Red Car, what’s the plan?
Ahhh, dear reader, what it is is clever AF. Let me explain.
1. Trump 2.0, being a clever businessman, offers the entire bloody US government work force an 8 month “buyout” to take a hike.
The offer ended last Wednesday and more than 75,000 US government workers took it.
From Trump’s perspective he bought a “future,” an option on paying these same 75,000 workers their same pay until October 2025. The workers go home today and get a paycheck and benefits until October 2025.
Trump 2.0 essentially used their own jobs to fund their severance and to get rid of them. Clever.
2. On Friday, Trump 2.0 announced a Friday Night Massacre of 200,000 jobs eliminated amongst probationary employees (persons in their job for less than 2 years) with a very limited severance spelled out in 5 U.S.C. chapter 81, subchapter I and only applicable to those employees with at least 1 year of service and not being fired for cause.
Here’s a link to the applicable explanation from the Office of Personnel Management:
Severance Package for Terminated Workers.
Is is an “across-the-board” reduction in force much as the military conducts after the end of a war.
At the end of the Viernam War, the military reduced the Army from north of 3MM to less than 1MM in a short period of time. RIFs are part of government employment.
3. At the same time, the Trump 2.0 admin is freezing new hires and encouraging early retirement.
4. All of this is against a backdrop of Trump 2.0 eliminating departments and agencies enmasse.
This will undoubtedly reduce the size of the government work force.
This has never happened before has it, Big Red Car?
Uhhh, not exactly, amigo.
During the Bill Clinton administration, he undertook a review of government staffing called the National Performance Review led by VP Alberto Gore and Elaine Karmarck.
The Clinton admin huffed, puffed, and blew away 426,000 US government jobs by September 2000.
They took a much longer time to delete the jobs than the first month of the Trump 2.0 admin. They did not have a “move fast and break shit” genius like this Elon Musk chap to lead the effort.
It’s a little weird, Big Red Car, isn’t it?
If you only knew, my dear friend. Let’s chat about the 75,000 workers who took the buyout as an example.
1. Without coercion of any kind, more than 75,000 government workers took the Trump 2.0 buyout offer. Grown ups, they exercised their personal perogative and took the deal: full paid leave until October and then adios, MFer.
2. The Dems immediately ran to a favorably inclined political judge (called venue shopping) and attempted to deny Trump 2.0 their fat reduction program calling it unconstitutional and other objections. They did not mention that the workers jumped at the chance to leave their Federal employment.
3. The unions — who don’t want to lose those union dues — jumped into the middle of it and said Trump 2.0 didn’t have the authority to buy out their workers.
Think about that for a second: 75,000+ workers freely turned their backs on the unions and the unions said, “You can’t do that. You have to stay with us.”
Bottom line it, Big Red Car
I love asking people how many US government workers there are. Nobody ever ever ever gets it right.
One pal keeps telling me there are 8MM workers. In reality the number is . . . . . 2,200,000 (excluding military but including civilians who work for the military) and an additional 650,000 who work for the US Post Office. So, the answer is 2,850,000.
You will notice that the number in play — being eliminated — by Trump 2.0 is 275,000 — 75,000 buyout and 200,000 Friday Night Massacre. That is a good start, no?
It is clear that Trump 2.0 will get to the first goal of reducing the government work force by 10% rather easily. The next 10% will come more slowly and will entail the closing down of specific government departments and agencies (there are 400 government agencies, amidos).
This is what Trump 2.0 promised and why Musk took on DOGE. Promise made, promise kept.
But, hey, what the Hell do I really know anyway? I’m just a Big Red Car.
