Fourth of July, Santa Fe Style

Big Red Car here.  Going to be a great day in the ATX.  And why not?  Hell, it’s Friday and Fridays are good for everyone.

The Boss is in Santa Fe and was going on and on about how they celebrate the Fourth in Santa Fe.  Yeah, the Big Red Car did not get to make the trip so the Big Red Car is already sick and tired hearing about it.

But just for you, dear reader, we will listen just one more time.  Sheesh!

Pancakes on the Plaza

So Santa Fe has this great traditional observance of the Fourth sponsored by the Rotary Club called “Pancakes on the Plaza”.  [OK, is that too obvious or what?  Hey, Rig Red Car, snap out of it.  Get with the program.]

The Plaza dates from 1610 at the founding of the city of Santa Fe by the Spaniards who then controlled Mexico.  It is a lovely square in the middle of the town and on the Fourth they — hold your breath a bit and act interested — they serve mountains of pancakes.   [Click on the photo to see it in full scale.]

The pancakes are cooked by the locals including the Governor — Santa Fe being the capital of New Mexico and all.

Music at the bandstand

There is a great old bandstand in the Plaza which provides a great place to showcase local New Mexico talent and bands.  The festivities include wonderful music which has a local flair.

There was a band playing called the Manzanares — this is Nuevo Latin Guitar music.  Not something we get enough of in the ATX and the ATX is a music mecca, ya’ll.  But, hey, you knew that right?  [Haha, Big Red Car, you crack yourself up, now don’t you?]

The music is beautiful and David, the lead singer, is a charismatic and powerful presence.  His son and brother also play with the band.

Take a look at their website here.  They are great.

The folks were dancing to the band in front of the bandstand in the Plaza.  There were some great dancers.

The old cars

You know a Big Red Car is going to love to see his kindred spirits and brothers.  On one street leading up to the Plaza they had the old cars lined up like troopers on parade.  They had some of the most interesting cars you could hope to find.

The Boss particularly liked a 1938 BMW Roadster and an old Ford convertible.  [Wow, calm down now, Boss, you got a Big Red Car convertible which has given you decades of service.  You aren’t thinking about getting rid of an American muscle car and getting one of those Nancy Girl foreign jobs are you?  Hey, Boss, I need some reassurance here.  Haha, The Boss loves his Big Red Car, ya’ll knew that, right?]

Now that’s an All American convertible though it is not a Chevy or a Big Red Car.

Haha, Nancy Girl foreign car, though it is a nice convertible, no?

Well, there you have it.  Fourth of July in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Pancakes on the Plaza and cool, clear and crisp air.

But, hey, what the Hell do I know really?  I’m just a Big Red Car.  Maybe next year I get to go to Santa Fe, Boss?  Boss?
