It takes a considerable amount of time to internalize VMS and then find a way to articulate it in a manner that is easy to understand. Amazing how powerful it can be when you nail it.

100%. This was a big topic when I was at HP, and we had a process for ensuring alignment during the planning stage of Objectives. It was called Hoshin planning, and I wrote a bit about MBOs here http://startupmanagement.org/2013/10/09/dont-abolish-mbos/. That preceded The Balanced Scorecard movement which is really all about alignment throughout the organization.
