Big Red Car here on this sad day after the Boston Marathon Massacre. The Big Red Car is both sad and angry.
Godspeed to all of the victims of this terrorist act.
It is so silly to discuss whether this is an “act of terrorism” — any indiscriminate act of attempted murder is surely intended to create terror. Whether it involves Islamic terrorists or Al Qaeda is irrelevant. This is an act of terrorism. Unequivocally. Stop kidding yourself.
They will be caught
The forensic evidence that is available from this act will ultimately deliver the cowards who did this into the hands of law enforcement.
There is no way to hide the type of explosive, the detonating device (likely a cell phone based trigger), the local video connections and the dishonor amongst such rats.
They will be caught and they will stand before the bar of justice to answer for their cowardly acts. It is only a matter of time. The clock is ticking.
Why?
One is tempted to look for a logical reason as to why this happened and what can be done at that intellectual level to prevent this from happening again in the future.
I fear such intellectual approaches are fraught with failure. We may never really be able to understand why any person would seek to indiscriminately kill others in such an otherwise peaceful and joyful setting.
It is an illogical and indefensible act and we should not struggle to understand the motivations. They are not reasonable.
What they are are the acts of cowards who only operate in the shadows and whose cowardly actions produce a perverse pleasure by killing the joy and love of life that is experienced by such folks as those who run the Boston Marathon.
Punishment
The Big Red Car is against the death penalty as is The Boss. That being said, the punishment for this crime must be swift and fierce. It must be made clear to such persons that they and their behavior will not be tolerated by civilized people whose very civilization and attendant freedoms provide the environment in which these cowards’ acts can be perpetrated.
This is why such charades as the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed — captured in 2003 in Pakistan and the mastermind of 9-11 — have to be concluded in a powerful and forceful manner in which the result fits the crimes. While I continue to be opposed to capital punishment for a number of reasons, perhaps this is a worthy exception. When we fail to conclude such matters, we fail to provide a sense of the seriousness of such crimes to others who might contemplate such wrongdoing.
God bless all in Boston and from Boston — the cradle of America’s liberties. Be strong and do not waver. All of America is with you. Catch those bastards.
