The Musings of the Big Red Car

Vision v Mission

Big Red Car here.  Can you believe this weather in the ATX?  Gorgeous.  Mahvelous!

The Boss is talking to a few of his brilliant CEOs.  They continue to confuse the implications of Vision v Mission.

Let the Big Red Care hep (that is not a typo, ya’ll, in Texas we “hep” folks sometimes).

We are talking Vision, Mission, Strategy, Tactics, Objectives, Values, Culture here.

Read this old post about Vision and Mission and search for other similar posts.  Entrepreneurs, you HAVE to get this right.  It is like wearing your underwear on the outside of your khakis if you don’t.

Vision

Vision is the unique province of the entrepreneurial founder.  It is her voice and hers alone.  It is sung solo.  Vision is the insight as to where the entrepreneur sees herself and the product or company at some distinct instant in the future when she has changed the world or eliminated a unique pain point for the world.  It is huge.  It is daring.

Vision is poetry.

Mission

Mission is the unique province of the company and it is a chorus of the entrepreneurial founder and management as to what shall be accomplished by the product or company as it dances to the music of the Vision.  It is a duet.  It is derived from the Vision.

Mission is prose.  Lovely prose, to be sure but prose.

Now get the Hell out of here and write down your Vision and Mission.  Have a great Easter.

But, hey, what the Hell do I really know anyway?  I’m just a Big Red Car.  Save a chocolate bunny for a Big Red Car.
