Big Red Car here. Crisp cool morning in the ATX. It’s 45F looking for 75F later today. Ahh, on Earth as it is in Texas, ya’ll. Perhaps in Heaven as it is in Texas?
So, The Boss is talking to one of his brilliant CEOs and the CEO laments the difficulty of achieving balance in his life and work. It is a common refrain and The Boss has heard it before and will hear it again, I am sure. This is not a unique problem.
Typical situation, his startup is consuming him. He has leaped into the raging storm that is a startup and feels keenly the imbalance in his life. He cannot find his footing in his personal life as he lives and breathes his startup. Maybe a spot of pressure on this score from his loving spouse.
So what we are talking about here is achieving work life balance in a startup. Hmmm, catchy turn of a phrase, no? [STFU, Big Red Car, and get on with telling the story. Sheesh, Big Red Car!]
Normal
Bad news, Grasshopper, the CEO is the typical CEO/founder — startups are an all consuming fire that burn everything they touch. This is unfortunately normal. Well, normal for a startup founder and CEO.
But with this “normal” comes a challenge — can a founder CEO transform this “normal” into something that will overcome this feeling of hopeless in other aspects of his life?
The answer? The answer, Old Sport — YES.
It will take work.
Work
Like Stonewall Jackson said: “You may be whatever you resolve to be.”
This resolve is the work that is required to put your thumb on the scale and arrive at some better balance between work and life.
As a startup founder and CEO, you are not afraid of work. Hell, you thrive on it. It is what you do.
So, Big Red Car, what is the work of which you speak? Give me some guidance here, Big Red Car. [The Big Red Car loves it when you speak directly to him. Kind of shines up his ego, don’t ya know?]
Goal setting
So the Big Red Car stole The Boss’s work product that he had helped the brilliant CEO put on paper. It is called: Life Planning and Goal Setting for the Chief Executive Officer.
The Boss first used this kind of guidance on himself in the mid 1990’s and committed it to writing in 2009. It is the product of a couple of decades of thought on his part and he has used it himself.

But, hey, what the Hell do I really know anyway? I’m just a Big Red Car. Be good to yourself, you deserve it.
