Venezuela — A Huge Concern

Big Red Car here enjoying the warm, gray days in the ATX. OK, had the air conditioning on yesterday afternoon! Hello, America.

So, the USA has been distracted by all the distractions and has not been paying attention to Venezuela and Russia.

You know that Russia has been meddling in our hemisphere for some time: Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. These countries have welcomed Russian assistance because they are economic basket cases.

[Hey, what happened to the Monroe Doctrine? <<<link]

“Wow, Vlad, you’re a little shit, aren’t you?”

Stop — Venezuela used to be the wealthiest country in South America with the largest known oil reserves in the world. They have 300,000,000,000 recoverable barrels of oil lurking below the surface. Still, somehow, they have managed to find a way to turn into a shithole [talking to you, socialism].

Cuba was once the wealthiest Caribbean island, but Fidel Castro and communism killed that baby.

Dealing With Despots – USA Russia Summit Meetings

Big Red Car in the ATX, which is headed to 105F today – it looks like 112F on Monday. Hello, Texas summer! It hit 102F yesterday.

So, the entire kerfuffle of Putin – a despot – meeting with our president got me interested in the history of US-Russia summits. Turns out there is a lot of history which is pertinent to the subject.

What is particularly interesting to me is the first such summits.

The players were Stalin, Nikita Krushchev, Vice President Nixon, President Eisenhower, and President Kennedy.

Russia — The Bear Who Shat in the Woods?

Russia, the Big Red Car is talking Russia today. Let me bottom line it, Russia is a punk.

Let me tell you why.

US GDP $17,947,000,000,000 — $18 TRILLION.

European Union GDP $16,220,000,000,000 — $16 TRILLION.

Russian GDP $1,324,000,000,000 — $1.3 TRILLION.

Italy GDP $1,815,757,000,000 — $1.8 TRILLION.

As you can see, the US and the EU (a fair approximation for NATO) has a GDP of $34 TRILLION v $1.3 TRILLION for Russia.

Hell, Italy is bigger than Russia!

Hello, world, you getting this? Russia is tiny when compared to the West. Hello, America!

Aleppo — Drifting Toward Disaster

Aleppo, Big Red Car?

Big Red Car here on a glorious Texas sunshine fest. Ahhh, on Earth as it is in Texas!

So, the world is watching the death throes of Aleppo as the Russians and the Syrians of Bashar al-Assad destroy a modern city building by building. The Russians intend to level the eastern half of the city and destroy it using bunker busting bombs against hospitals in the process. This is destruction of the ghastly quality of the Allied efforts against Germany (well-deserved, mind you) in World War II. It is brutal, barbaric, horrific, real, and happening right now.

How did this happen, Big Red Car?

Blundering Into War — Syria, the United States, Russia

Big Red Car here. Here being the peaceful ATX — Austin by God Texas.

Wishing the world nothing but peace on this lovely sunny Texas day.

We have an incredibly large opportunity to blunder our way into an armed confrontation in the Middle East — well, two actually.

The first is the dog meat agreement with Iran.

The more subtle one is the situation in Syria. Continue reading

World War III

Big Red Car here.  Nice weather all week in the ATX.  Bad situation getting worse in the Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

There are those students of history who will opine the seeds for World War II were planted when British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced on 30 September 1938 he and a fellow named Adolph Hitler had achieved “…peace in our time…” by their signing of the Munich Agreement.  The results thereafter would prove Chamberlain to be wrong, very wrong.  The world would be plunged into seven years of conflict culminating with the US unleashing nuclear weapons on the Japanese in 1945.

Lines, Red Lines, Deadlines

Big Red Car here.  Going to be another great day in paradise.  Paradise being Austin by God Texas, ya’ll.  Going to be about 75F here today.

So, unless you’ve been in outer space for a couple of weeks, you’re probably aware that Secretary of State John F Kerry has given Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Russians until Monday to withdraw from Crimea and to stop threatening Ukraine with a Russian invasion.  Whew! Continue reading

The Journey to Today in the Ukraine

Big Red Car here.  Well, I got The Boss to return to the ATX.  The old boy had enough of Sun Valley and Steamboat Springs and spring skiing.  Back to the ATX in time for SXSW and 300 people in line for cabs at the airport.  Never saw so many nerds in my life.

The mess in the Ukraine is not over and the potential for the Ukrainian military to brush up against the Russians continues to heighten with each passing day. Continue reading

The Ukraine a Test of American Capabilities and Credibility

Big Red Car here.  The Boss is in Steamboat having toured Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and now Colorado.  Big range of weather enroute and some striking country [some boring as sin country also — hey, sin isn’t boring is it?]

So you have undoubtedly been following the brouhaha in the Ukraine, no? Continue reading
