When The Student Is Ready . . . . .

I get a lot of emails from readers of this blog. I answer all of them. Often when someone asks me a question, I just call them under the theory of, “If it can be dispensed with within two minutes or less, do it now.”

A substantial number of emails are about The Wisdom of the Campfire which is the CEO coaching business I have run for a decade. It does not have a website; I do not market it; I only take referrals, but you can refer yourself if you have that gear.

A common suggestion is that I write more about CEO coaching. This is balanced by a number of other suggestions that suggest I write more/less about politics — nah, but thanks. I try to only write about policy.

There is a writer who demands I write fanciful Army stories. One writer has asked me on a few occasions to thin the herd by dropping out in a very final and forceful sort of way.

CEO coaching is an interesting endeavor. It is based upon a single foundation — is the CEO ready to be coached?

I often say, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”

Board meeting in progress – which one is the CEO/founder? Note the gender diversity, lively engaged debate, and relaxed business casual dress code.

Graduation — CEO Coach

Big Red Car here in the ATX in a grayish, cool day. A great day for a ride in a convertible!

So, I’ve been in CEO coaching mode for about five years now and there have been some great successes. Some failures, but way more successes.

CEO coaching assignments don’t last forever — neither does high school or college.

There comes a time when a CEO is best served by getting a different view of things or to just take a breather. Some CEOs finish their work and are ready to move. Other CEOs sell the company and no longer are CEOs.

The Big Red Car (actually The Boss, but I’m taking over the space in his head) has had all of the above.

CEO Coaching — Firing a Client

Big Red Car here. The summer has settled in and it is a nice hot one, y’all. I took a nice ride yesterday and it was steamy. I just got a new set of tires and I was cruising.

So The Boss was talking to me about the CEO coaching business. He gets a lot of calls and he has had some clients for almost three years now.

Not long ago, he fired a client. What? Firing a client? Continue reading

Advising the Seasoned CEO

Big Red Car here. Had to get up at 4:00 am to get My Perfect Daughter to the airport to go back to NYC. Hey, I’m tired. I’m an old Big Red Car. Nah, I’m dong just fine.

So The Boss is talking to several of his brilliant CEO clients. They get on the subject of no longer being gangly startups and where they can get good advice as small and medium business CEOs.  Continue reading

CEO Coaching — Sounding Board

Big Red Car here.  Brrr, cold here in the ATX this morning early at 43F.  However, Old Sport, it will be 65F before the day is over.

So we’re still on the subject of what constitutes good CEO coaching.  A good CEO coach provides a CEO with a sounding board upon which to bounce off ideas and to do a bit of brainstorming.

CEO Coaching — Chemistry

Big Red Car here.  Bit cool but bright and sunny.  The Boss is out power washing the driveway.  The Boss loves power washing.  [he is really a simpleton who readily embraces simple solutions.  But, hey, who doesn’t love a clean driveway and walks and patio?]

So I was eavesdropping on a couple of conversations between The Boss and some of his brilliant CEO clients.  They were talking about chemistry.  Huh?
