Board Duties — Handle With Care II

Big Red Car here.  Wow, we had a very nice rain last night replete with lightning, thunder and wind.  Ahhh, it was the best.  We desperately need water to fill the area lakes.  The lakes have been down a bit since 2011 but they are building back with the recent rains.  In the last month, water levels are up almost four feet.

So today we finish up our discussion on the nature of Board duties.  We began the discussion here <<<link, so check that prior post before launching into this one.

Occam’s Razor — A Rule For Simpletons

Big Red Car here.  The Boss was up very early this morning and out to the lakehouse and back almost before dawn.  He’s been a busy beaver these days.

He was meeting with someone who was trying to explain something to him that he believed was very simple.  The Boss likes simple.  In fact, he often says that he IS a simpleton meaning thereby that he likes simple things.

Cool New Website — PEGGSITE.COM

Big Red Car here.  Hey, rain in the ATX and a huge lightning delay in the Longhorns v Texas Christian University.  Longhorns v Christians?  Final score after the long lightning delay: 30-7.

Horns prevail over Horned Frogs, well, Christian horned frogs, no?

So The Boss is talking up a cool new website called peggsite.com.  Go check it out.

What Food Stamps Tell Us About the Economy

Big Red Car here.  Ya’ll know what’s cooking in the ATX, right?  I’m not going to tease you.  It’s fabulous.

So The Boss is talking to one of his professorial buddies and they’re talking about the economy.  Ooooh, the economy is not doing very well, Grasshopper.  You knew that right?

Troy H Middleton, Citizen Soldier

Big Red Car here.  Well, you know what I’m going to say — right?  On Earth as it is in Austin, Texas, ya’ll, cause it’s just about perfect here in the ATX.

So The Boss is finishing up reading about his tenth book on the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.  He gets fixated on something in his reading — last time it was the masonry design of Irish castles, haha — and he just reads and studies it in depth and extracts the learnings like he was squeezing an orange to make orangeade.

You do love orangeade, right?  Bit of simple syrup, bit of peel, bit of something fizzy and fresh squeezed oranges.  Fresh, Old Sport, fresh.

Read carefully, friends, this will all circle back to entrepreneurial decision making but you’re going to have to stay on the horse for the entire journey.

In Praise of Black Labs

Big Red Car here.  Well today is going to be a beauty in the ATX.  Bit of a chill in the air at 60F this morning and maybe as low as the 40’s tonight.  I am predicting the first wood fire of the season tonight.  Haha, it is finally Fall in Texas.  And it is glorious.

So The Boss is talking to one of his CEO clients and they are having a lively chat.  On the way home, The Boss is thinking about one of his favorite traveling companions.

Achieving Work Life Balance in a Startup, You CAN Do It

Big Red Car here.  Crisp cool morning in the ATX.  It’s 45F looking for 75F later today.  Ahh, on Earth as it is in Texas, ya’ll.  Perhaps in Heaven as it is in Texas?

So, The Boss is talking to one of his brilliant CEOs and the CEO laments the difficulty of achieving balance in his life and work.  It is a common refrain and The Boss has heard it before and will hear it again, I am sure.  This is not a unique problem.

Harnessing the Power of a Crisis

Big Red Car here.  We’ve been having a bit of rain here in the ATX.  And that, Old Sport, is a very good thang as we are needing some more water in the lakes just now.

Look here and see this short video of the torrent of water flowing through Barton Springs.  If you don’t know Barton Springs, then you don’t know Austin.

Fundraising developments

Big Red Car here.  The Boss is back in town through the rest of the year — well, except for a visit to NYC and a couple of weeks of skiing in early December.  The Boss likes that skiing.  It’s already snowed in the Rockies.

This morning he was up early and had a conversation with one of his CEOs that he’s had about a thousand times — raising money.  It’s what CEOs do whether they like it or not.

Most CEOs do not like raising money.

Planning, It’s a Tough Discipline

Big Red Car here.  Bit cloudy early this morning in the ATX but it’s going to burn off and be a lovely, warm day.  On Earth as it is in Texas!

Horns won last night v Iowa State and had a tough time of it.  Whew.  Mack Brown might want to start updating his resume.  The Big Red Car supports Mack Brown and wants to remind everyone that the guy saved the Longhorns’ bacon and returned them to prominence.  But then again, what have you done for me recently, right?

Today, The Boss is going to take me to the body shop and get a price to get me repainted.  Ahhh, I think The Boss is up to something.  Hmmm.

I wonder what he’s planning.

CEO Coaching and Advice

Big Red Car here.  Well, Old Sport, you know what’s next, right?  Haha, great day in the ATX, ya’ll.  Warm, clear, sunny and glorious.  On Earth as it is in Austin, By God, Texas!

So The Boss is talking to one of his brilliant CEOs and they get into the subject of CEO coaching and all things related to advice.

The Pettiness of Failure

Big Red Car here.  The Boss’s Old Man — 95 years old and a career Army guy who received a battlefield commission fighting the Germans in Italy in World War II — has seen a lot of history.  He opines that the current administration is the least accomplished in his lifetime.  There is much evidence to support that assertion.
